My father recently suffered a stroke. I found out recently that had been duped in a credit card scam that has cost him about $36,000. He has been making monthly payments ($550/month) to Consumer Debt Assistance out of Irvine, CA, for the last 18 months. When I checked this company out on the BBB site, they had a grade of "F". Should I advise my father to stop making payments to this company? If so, what happens to the money he has already paid (approx. $9900)? He is still getting phone calls from the credit card companies trying to collect their money. I don't believe that the Consumer Debt Assistance has done anything to bring down his debt. What are his options? By the way, I am his executor and Power of Attorney. Thanks!

I agree with Bill. Unfortunately being that your father has been with this program for 18 months, it is likely that most of that money has just been sucked up in fees and you could have lawsuits just around the corner. I see you posted this about a month ago, can you update me on what you have done? I would call them and ask how much money is in your set aside account vs how much has been collected in fees. You will also want to know if anything has been settled yet. If you decide that you want to cancel, be prepared for resistance from the sales affiliates because they usually don't like to give back money. Often times they will throw out a low offer and ask you to sign a waiver indicating that you won't tell anyone about it and you won't try to go after the rest. You will have to decide based on that how much you are willing to fight for. 10,000 is a heck of a lot of money if they didn't do anything. Please update us on your situation and I will be happy to help further if needed.

Hi Maria, Looking into what you have gone through I can understand your situation and frustration and the loss of trust, but let me tell you 5 fingers in our hand are not all of the same length, so 5 different companies are not the same, why do not you give it a try, mail your problems to James Smith our office manager and I hope he can work out the best plan for you where you can really save some money.
